We'll let you in on an industry secret: it's possible to clear Diagnostic Trouble Codes (DTCs) and turn off dashboard lights without fixing the underlying vehicle problem – this is not a practice we do at Protech Automotive Solutions®. Our mantra is, "cleared is not calibrated." Protech's holistic training instructs our technicians how to perform and validate their work according to service procedures, putting every vehicle back on the road safely.
Protech's Approach to Diagnostic Trouble Codes
When vehicle repairs are completed, Protech technicians conduct an advanced vehicle diagnostic scan on the vehicle to check for DTCs. While a DTC code can identify an error in the vehicle's electronics, the code - or lack of a code - generated during a diagnostic scan will not determine whether the vehicle's safety systems are calibrated and aimed correctly.
Repair shops can clear a DTC, but only calibration tells technicians and drivers that the vehicle is fully repaired. Shops calibrating cars to original equipment manufacturer (OEM) standards without a post- scan may result in vehicle safety features not performing as intended – putting drivers into potentially unsafe vehicles.
Today's vehicle components are made up of intricate computers, electronic control modules, electrical wiring and electronic sensors, which provide data when errors occur or damage from a collision compromises electronic systems, after which a DTC will be set in the computer. Unfortunately, DTCs do not tell technicians exactly what the underlying problem may be. Therefore, Protech emphasizes the importance of pre- and post-repair vehicle diagnostic scans.
Problem-solving is an essential skill for Protech technicians, and they love a good puzzle. They believe in our commitment to do the right thing and dig deeper to find the solution to all DTCs found during the repair process. We are not in business to "check boxes" – we ensure we complete the proper procedures and validate them with calibrations ensuring the vehicles perform to OEM specifications.
